Community story

Blessed Father Michael J. McGivney

The founder of the Knights of Columbus — and the spirit behind the KC halls at the heart of so many Midwest communities.

When people think of the Midwest, they think of close-knit communities, neighbors helping neighbors, church fish fries, parish festivals, youth sports, wedding receptions, charity dinners, and families coming together. Much of that spirit has found a home in the Knights of Columbus Hall.

In 1882, Blessed Father Michael J. McGivney founded the Knights of Columbus after seeing Catholic families fall into poverty when they lost a husband or father. He believed that men of faith could unite to support one another through charity, fraternity, and service. What began as a small parish organization has grown into one of the largest Catholic charitable organizations in the world.

Today, Father McGivney is on the path to canonization as a saint because of his heroic virtue and the lasting impact of his ministry. He was beatified in 2020 after the Vatican recognized a miracle attributed to his intercession, and one additional approved miracle is generally required before canonization.

Across the Midwest, Knights of Columbus halls have become far more than meeting places. They’ve become the heart of countless communities—a place to celebrate weddings, host fish fries and fundraisers, cheer on youth sports, support local causes, honor veterans, gather after Mass, and lend a helping hand to neighbors in need. Father McGivney’s vision wasn’t just to build an organization—it was to build stronger families, stronger parishes, and stronger communities.

Here’s to a priest whose legacy continues to bring people together, one community at a time.
